Hong Kong and Macau are about an hour apart by ferry or bridge bus, but they have separate mobile networks, so a plan for one does not automatically work in the other. A Macau-only plan stops working when you reach Hong Kong, and a Hong Kong-only plan stops in Macau. For a combined trip you either carry two plans and switch between them, or use one multi-country plan that covers both — this guide explains both options and the crossing itself.
Two places, two sets of networks
Macau and Hong Kong are separate Special Administrative Regions of China, each with its own immigration, currency and mobile operators. When you cross, your phone has to join a new network, and an eSIM can only join the networks its plan includes. Our Macau plans use CTM and 3 Macau inside Macau and have no coverage in Hong Kong. A Hong Kong-only plan likewise has no Macau coverage unless its plan page lists Macau.
The same applies at the land border with Zhuhai: mainland China needs a plan that covers it.
Which plan to choose
| Your trip | What works well |
|---|---|
| Mostly Hong Kong, one day in Macau | Your Hong Kong plan, plus a Macau 24-hour pass for the day |
| A few days in each | One China (mainland, Hong Kong, Macao) plan, or a Hong Kong plan plus a Macau fixed-data plan |
| Mostly Macau, one day in Hong Kong | A Macau plan plus a Hong Kong plan for the day, or one multi-country plan |
| Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai or wider Guangdong | The China (mainland, Hong Kong, Macao) plan |
| A wider trip around Asia | An Asia plan covering 12 to 20 destinations — check that both Hong Kong and Macau are listed |
Hong Kong-only plans are sold by our sister store, Hong Kong eSIM. Multi-country plans show their destinations, networks and IP location on each plan page; compare them on our Macau eSIM plans list.
Two eSIMs or one?
Two plans — one for Macau, one for Hong Kong — suit trips centered on one city. Most eSIM phones can store several eSIM profiles: install both before you travel and switch the mobile-data line when you cross. Each plan only starts when it first connects in its own destination, so installing the Macau eSIM in Hong Kong days ahead is fine.
One multi-country plan is simpler if you go back and forth or continue into mainland China: there is nothing to switch, and the eSIM usually moves to a local network by itself after each border. On mainland networks, roaming plans route your data outside the mainland; the IP location is shown on the plan page. Hotel and café Wi-Fi in mainland China is filtered, so apps such as Google and WhatsApp generally do not work on it — unlike Wi-Fi in Macau and Hong Kong.
Crossing: ferry or bridge bus
- Ferry: high-speed ferries leave the Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan, on Hong Kong Island, and take about an hour. TurboJET sails mainly to the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, convenient for the Historic Centre, and Cotai Water Jet to the Taipa Ferry Terminal near the Cotai resorts. Sailings run from morning until late at night; book ahead for weekends and public holidays.
- Bridge bus: shuttle buses cross the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge around the clock, from the Hong Kong Port near the airport on Lantau to the Macao Port, in around 40 minutes. It is the natural choice if you are flying in or out of Hong Kong or staying near the airport; from central Hong Kong the ferry is usually quicker door to door.
Either way you clear Hong Kong exit and Macau entry immigration, so carry your passport and check whether your nationality needs a visa for Macau — the rules are not the same as Hong Kong’s. When Typhoon Signal No. 8 is raised, ferries and bridge buses stop, so watch the forecast in summer and early fall.
What happens to your data at the border
- Leaving Hong Kong: a Hong Kong-only plan loses signal over the water or on the bridge. If you have a Macau eSIM installed, switch mobile data to it as you arrive; its validity starts with that first connection.
- In Macau: check that data roaming is on for the Macau eSIM line and that it is the line selected for mobile data. The Hong Kong line can stay installed for your return.
- Back in Hong Kong: switch mobile data back to the Hong Kong eSIM. Any unused Macau data stays on the Macau eSIM until its validity ends.
- Multi-country plan: nothing to switch; if it does not reconnect after a crossing, toggle airplane mode once.
On the ferry or the bridge, expect a few minutes without data, and do not be surprised if your phone briefly shows a mainland network near Zhuhai. Save boarding passes, hotel addresses and offline maps before you set off. Our Macau arrival guide covers what to do once you land.
Small differences that catch travelers out
- Money: Hong Kong dollars are widely accepted in Macau, usually one for one, but Macau patacas are hard to spend in Hong Kong — use them up before you leave.
- Transport cards: the Octopus card does not work on Macau buses or the LRT; use a Macau Pass, a QR-code wallet or exact cash.
- Apps: everything that works in Hong Kong works in Macau too. Standard Macau plans route data through Hong Kong, so your apps behave much as they did there; choose a plan labelled Non-HK IP if you need a non-Hong Kong address.
- Language: both cities speak Cantonese and write Traditional Chinese, but Macau’s street signs pair Chinese with Portuguese, while Hong Kong’s use English.

Frequently asked questions
Will my Hong Kong eSIM work in Macau?
Only if its plan lists Macau as a destination. A Hong Kong-only plan has no Macau networks, so add a Macau plan for your visit or use a multi-country plan that covers both.
Can I install my Macau eSIM while I am still in Hong Kong?
Yes. Install it over Wi-Fi whenever it suits you; its validity only starts when it first connects to a network in Macau.
Which plan covers Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai?
The China (mainland, Hong Kong, Macao) plan covers all three on one eSIM. Several Asia plans also include Hong Kong and Macau, so check each plan page for its destination list.
